The IBM Almaden Research Center, located near San Jose, California, is one of IBM's largest research centers, specializing in both basic research in material science and applied research in computer storage like GPFS, where many refinements and improvements were made in hard disc drive technology. History

The Almaden Research Center was established in 1986 in order to further expand IBM Research on the West Coast. The site was chosen because of its close proximity to Stanford University, UC Berkeley and other collaborative academic institutions.
   The Almaden Research Center was the successor to the San Jose Research Laboratory which was established in 1952.
